From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

--François Recanati, Institut Jean-Nicod

Query:   Dear LINGUISTs:

I am searching for the Latin original and the full citation of a
passage by Roger Bacon which is often cited by linguists (though
usually without a reference). The passage runs (in one translation)
''He that understands grammar in one language understands it in another
as far as the essential properties of grammar are concerned.''

Can someone help?

Thanks,

Dirk Elzinga
