From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

--François Recanati, Institut Jean-Nicod

Query:   Hi,

just read that the North Caucasian language TABASSARAN (or: TABASARAN,
TABASARANTSY, GHUMGHUM) has 52 cases. Is that true? Does anyone have
further information? Which language has the largest number of cases?
Thanks for any input, IP

Q: Double-Dutch and Youthese

Dear Linguists,

not being particularly in to sociolinguistic literature myself, I
do hope some of you could help me with references to (preferably
not too inaccessible) literature on the sociolinguistic aspects
of the following two (distinct) phenomena:

(A) secret signalization codes among children approaching (but still
not having fully reached) the age of adolescence, particularly
so-called ''Double-Dutch'' (a more or less invariant standard
syllable is inserted into every word to render it unrecognizable)
in various languages of the World;

(B) exclusivist, but not particularly secretive youth-specific
slang, so-called ''Youthese'', among teenagers (adolescents),
functioning as peer, in-group, or clique trademark.

If you know of publications in which the two phenomena were compared
with each other, I would be interested in that too.

Please answer directly to me. I'll post a complete summary.

Thanks in advance and regards, Waruno
