Can someone please recommend a good book (or good books) on corpus
linguistics? That may not be the right question. What I'm after, actually, is a way to answer questions of a type which occur to me frequently: What is the frequency of construction X in language Y? That is, I want to approach it mainly in the role of consumer. Is there a single book (or relatively few) which answer that sort of question for a wide variety of whatever I might choose for X and Y (or am I just dreaming here)? At this point, I'm mostly interested in English, Chinese, and ASL (surely there is nothing yet for ASL, but I thought I'd ask). And mostly in natural conversation, although of course comparisons between genres and registers are of interest as well. Also, since I don't expect such a book to answer everything, how does one conduct one of these corpus searches I keep reading about? Is there a book that explains how to do that? Thanks in advance for your help, Peyton Todd |
