From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

--François Recanati, Institut Jean-Nicod

Query Subject:   query: discourse-initial 'and'

Query:   Can anyone suggest bibliography treating discourse-initial use of
'and', whether in poetry or in ordinary conversation? It appears to
suggest a tie to something assumed to be knopwn by both speaker and
hearer. Does this come under echoic utterances, or
metarepresentation? Or...?

Thanks. I'll post a summary if replies warrant it.
