From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

--François Recanati, Institut Jean-Nicod

Query Details

Query Subject:   Natve English speaking participants needed
Author:   Karen Glaser
Submitter Email:  click here to access email

Linguistic LingField(s):  Pragmatics

Query:   My name is Karen Glaser, and I am a PhD student at Chemnitz University of
Technology, Germany, conducting research on acquisitional pragmatics with
learners of English as a Foreign Language.

I am currently in the pilot test phase of the scenarios I'm planning to use
in my DCT (Discourse Completion Task) Questionnaire, and I'm still looking
for native speakers of English (any variety welcome!) who would be willing
to complete a questionnaire containing 12 scenarios that are accompanied by
multiple choice questions capturing the respondent's spontaneous
impressions of the situations. The questionnaire is actually quite
entertaining (so I've been told) and should take no longer than 10-15
minutes to complete.

The questionnaire is provided in both docx and doc format to ensure that it
runs smoothly on most computers. It can be accessed here (further
instructions are provided in the questionnaire):

doc-format:
http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/%7Ekreutel/Pragmatics/Situations_Questionnaire.doc

docx-format:
http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/%7Ekreutel/Pragmatics/Situations_Questionnaire.docx

If you would like to help me with my research by completing the
questionnaire and/or passing it on to (other) suitable participants, I'd
appreciate it very much. If you have any questions about my project, don't
hesitate to contact me at karen.glaser(at)phil.tu-chemnitz.de.

Thank you for considering my request - I'm very grateful for any support.

Sincerely,

Karen Glaser
