From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

--François Recanati, Institut Jean-Nicod

Query:   Dear linguists:

I am carrying out a comparative research on the conceptual metaphors for
time in English and Arabic within the Lakoffian framwork. I want to be sure
of two points.

(1)Is it true that so far no single comparative/contrastive study has been
carried out on time metaphors in Arabic and English.

(2) Do you have any published, and thus accessible, references on
comparative studies for time metaphors. Sometimes, I find some interesting
titles in the internet, but they are unpublished, rendering the access to
them difficult.

Thank you!
