From Utterances to Speech Acts

By Mikhail Kissine

"Kissine offers a new theory of speech acts which is philosophically sophisticated and builds on work in cognitive science, formal semantics, and linguistic typology. This highly readable, brilliant essay is a major contribution to the field."

--François Recanati, Institut Jean-Nicod

Linguistic LingField(s):  Linguistic Theories
Syntax

Query:   Dear all, I am working on topicalization of quantified DPs in Brazilian
Portuguese (BP) and I have already noticed that a topicalized DPs is okay
if it contains a modifier, as in (1) and (2):

(1) Every boy that I meet, you would like to meet (English)
(2) Todo menino bonito, a Maria quer namorar (BP)
all boy cute, the Maria wants date-Inf
“Every cute boy, Maria wants to data”

Thus, I would appreciate if you could tell if there is any research showing
other syntactic and semantic differences in behavior between DPs with and
without internal modification.

Thank you,
Carol Aguiar
