Hi all, I've had a couple more replies to my query since my last summary. Here's the main bits: Thomas Ernst <ternst@indiana.edu> You might ... be interested to look at a 1982 Indiana University dissertation by Evan Smith, "Relative THAT and AS: A Study in Category Change". Stanley Dubinsky <DUBINSK@VM.SC.EDU> Recategorization of prepositions as complementizers (Linguistic Inquiry 26.125-137) by myself and Kemp Williams deals with recategorization of temporal prepositions as complementizers, and brings dialect and historical evidence to bear on the issue. I must admit that I haven't had the time to follow up all of these sources, but those that I have I have found to be most informative. Thanks again, - Neil |
