Regarding query: http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-1321.html#1
I recently queried Linguist for articles that explore the Heritage Language speaker population, especially those which look at effective language teaching methodology for use with adults, particularly in a college classroom setting. In my own post, I mentioned a presentation by Frank Noji from Kapiolani Community College at TESOL 2006. Frank is finishing up the paper on which his presentation was based. I also mentioned the Heritage Language Journal, in particular the article, ''Heritage Language Instruction for Post-secondary Students from Immigrant Backgrounds'' by Kimi Kondo-Brown, University of Hawai'i at Manoa. http://www.international.ucla.edu/lrc/hlj/about.asp -------------------------------------------------------------- Louise Willoughby [ Louisa.Willoughby@arts.monash.edu.au ] recommended Clyne, Michael, Sue Fernandez, Imogen Chen and Renata Summo-O'Connell. 1997. Background speakers: Diversity and its management in LOTE programs. Canberra: Language Australia. and suggested Micheal's article if I were unable to get the book: Clyne, Michael. 1997. Managing language diversity and second language programmes in Australia. Current Issues in Language and Society. 4. 94-119. For people interested in the problems encountered in current Australian programs, another good article is Elder, Cathy. 2000. Outing the native speaker: the problem of diverse learner backgrounds in 'foreign' language classrooms - an Australian case study. Language, culture and curriculum. 13. 86-108. Louisa also offered a copy of her own article (in press) looking specifically at the factors motivating heritage language speakers to (not) study their heritage in senior high school. ---------------------------------------------------------- Fernanda Ferreira [ FFerreira@bridgew.edu ] referred me to an article of hers about Portuguese Heritage Learners in Massachusetts, in the Hispania journal (the peer-reviewed journal of the AATSP) which came out in December 2005. In that article she explores how talking about the inherent diversity of language has helped intermediate level learners. She is also currently working on a more quantitative analysis of the heritage language population, which she offered to send. ----------------------------------------------------------- McGinnis, Scott G. DLI-W [scott.mcginnis@us.army.mil] offered to post my query to the 500+-subscriber listserv heritage-list, affiliated with the Alliance for the Advancement of Heritage Languages (AAHL), and suggested checking out the AAHL website at www.cal.org (Center for Applied Linguistics), as they are conducting a survey of ''best practices'' in HL education. --------------------------------------- Andrea Menegotto [ menegot@mdp.edu.ar ] referred me to two sites from the University of Mar del Plata. The web journal ''Sos voz'' http://literatura-ele-mdp.blogspot.com is the final project of a Spanish language course addressed to heritage students. The methodology used in the courses can be found at http://ele-mdp.blogspot.com ---------------------------------------------------------- Manel Lacorte [mlacorte@umd.edu ] Sent me a link to his article, ''Teacher Beliefs and Practices in Advanced Spanish Classrooms'' http://www.international.ucla.edu/languages/heritagelanguages/journal/article.asp?parentid=31430 ----------------------------------------------------------- Karen Stanley [ karen.stanley@cpcc.edu ] Foreign Languages & Academic ESL Central Piedmont Community College Charlotte, North Carolina, USA http://people.cpcc.edu/~skh6004e |
