Comanche
- Jean Ormsbee Charney, A Grammar of Comanche. Studies in the Anthropology of North American Indians, Univ. of Nebraska Press, 1994. 273 pp. $35. --- A full descriptive grammar of Comanche, based on C.'s 1989 Univ. of Colorado dissertation. Phonology, morphology, and syntax are covered in a relatively theory-free format. C. compares the phonological processes of Comanche and Shoshone (the historically closest Numic language) and describes the phonetic changes leading to Comanche. The morphology is characterized by "a wealth of affixation," including instrumental prefixes, postpositions, and verbal suffixes. Nominals are highly inflected. Syntactic topics covered include topicality, evidentials, and switch reference. --- Order from: Univ. of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, NE
