Lakota (incl. Dakota)
- A variety of books and tapes on the Lakhota dialect of Dakota are available from the Colorado University Lakhota Project. - The bookstore of Sinte Gleska College (on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation) sells a wide range of books, tapes, and other materials on Lakota culture and language. - SSILA member Charles Thode, who teaches Dakota at the Univ. of Minnesota, has self-published a collection of 16 Dakota stories, Dakota Woyakapi I, for intermediate and advanced students of the language. All the texts are in Dakota and there is a full Dakota-English glossary at the end. The stories are beautifully illustrated with line drawings. - Santee (one of the d-dialects of Dakota) is spoken on or near the Santee Reservation in NE Nebraska. A cassette tape of Santee Dakota is available, prepared by Agnes Ross in 1983 and titled Dakota Language (FC-3001-C). It contains an English introduction, followed by words and phrases in a learning format: English, Dakota spoken slowly, and Dakota spoken rapidly. --- Order from: Featherstone, 400 N. - Calvin Fast Wolf, a Lakota from Pine Ridge, has been teaching his native language for a number of years. Most recently he has taught at Stanford, offering regular courses in Lakota under the sponsorship of the Linguistics department, and in Paris, where in 1994 he offered two 2-week intensive courses.
