Nez Perce
- Haruo Aoki, Nez Perce Dictionary. University of California Publications in Linguistics, No. 122. 1994. 1280 pp. $135. - This magnificent dictionary is the latest (and by far the largest) installment in the documentation of the Sahaptian language of Chief Joseph's people that A. began in 1970 with his Nez Perce Grammar (UCPL 62), and continued with his Nez Perce Texts (UCPL 90, 1979) and a volume of Nez Perce Oral Narratives compiled in collaboration with Deward E. Walker, Jr. (UCPL 104, 1989). Besides being the most exhaustive compilation of Nez Perce lexemes we shall probably ever see, A. has fleshed out many of his entries with citations from Nez Perce traditional literature to illustrate usage. A. has done a marvelous job of organizing this mass of information in such a way that it is equally useful to linguists and nonlinguists, and to Nez Perce speakers and non-Nez Perce speakers. The typography is elegant, the design pleasing, the illustrations well-chosen. It is humbling to realize that this, like nearly all of A.'s Nez Perce work over the last quarter century, is the product of the leisure hours of a full time teacher and researcher in a quite different field.- Order from: Univ. of California Press, 2120 Berkeley Way, Berkeley, CA 94720 (toll-free tel: 1-800-822-6657).
