The Twelfth Conference on Laboratory Phonology (LabPhon 12) will be held
Friday July 8 through Saturday July 10, 2010
at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. The theme of
this edition of the conference is Gesture as language; gesture and
language. The aim is to bring together researchers with a gestural
perspective on language (articulatory phonology, sign language, gestural
accompaniments to language, etc). A special session is planned on the
diversity of gestures used in spoken languages with a focus on native
languages of the Americas. The invited speaker for this session is Sharon
Hargus (University of Washington) and the discussant is Heriberto Avelino
(Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology). Contributions from
SSILA members are invited for this session or on any relevant topic.

The North American Association for the History of the Language
Sciences, which meets concurrently with SSILA and LSA, solicits
submissions from members of SSILA to a special session on the
historiography of indigenous languages of the Americas, to be held at
the NAAHoLS annual meeting Baltimore MD, 7-10 January 2010.
We are interested in research on any aspect of the history of how
indigenous languages have been studied and analyzed.
All presenters must be NAAHoLS members (contact the the Secretary at
dboe@nmu.edu
for details). Papers will be 20 minutes, with 10
minutes for discussion. Abstracts, which should not exceed 500 words,
may be submitted as hard copies or as file attachments (MS Word only).
The submission deadline is 1 September 2009.

The 2009 Conference on Community-Based Language Revival
will be hosted by The Three Rivers Language Center,
Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, Indiana, August 29-30, 2009.
Community and tribal organizations, educators, linguists, and anyone else
interested are invited to participate in a conference on reviving
endangered languages. Special emphasis will be on the participation of the
language community. Abstracts are now being taken for conference presentations,
sessions, and workshops.
The keynote address will be given by Daryl Baldwin of the Myaamia Project
at Miami University and Scott Shoemaker of the Miami Nation of Indiana.
The conference will also include dinner with an Old Order Amish family and
a special viewing of original prints from the Curtis collection.
