Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Support Description: The Linguistics Program at the University of Montana announces the availability of a graduate research assistantship for students entering the MA in Linguistics program (in AY 2014-2015). The research assistant will contribute to an NSF-funded project on Blackfoot Phonetics and Phonology. This research assistant will be employed for 20 hours/week during the 9-month academic year. This position includes a tuition waiver. This award will be granted to an MA graduate student who is applying for 2014 admission.

Work includes multiple tasks that contribute to the development of a database for phonetic and phonological analysis of Blackfoot prosody. Preference is given to students with a demonstrated interest in the Blackfoot language and/or language documentation.

Minimum qualifications: previous training and experience in linguistics and/or language documentation, ability to work with audio files and Office software including Excel and Access preferred, as well as ability and/or avid interest in acquiring skills in software such as ELAN, Praat and FLEx.
