The Department of French & Italian at the University of California, Davis, is
pleased to announce the availability of competitive research packages to
outstanding incoming graduate students. Financial awards are targeted to
highly-motivated, qualified prospective students in fields represented in the
Department. A full list of fellowships and grants for applicants of the highest

Fellowships include a waiver of full tuition.
Additional support in the form of Teaching Assistantships is available for
qualified students. Applicants should visit

Pertinent facts concerning the Department:
-In addition to scholars focusing on second language acquisition and theoretical
and applied linguistics, the Department of French & Italian and associated units
have faculty representing a broad spectrum of fields including: literary and
cultural studies, cinema studies, civilization, gender and women's studies, and
post-colonial theory.
- Departmental faculty pride themselves on close mentoring of graduate students.
Students in the program work with chosen faculty advisors throughout their
degree program.
- Students on the French Linguistics PhD track have the opportunity to take
classes in numerous other units including: Linguistics, the Center for the Mind.
and Brain, Spanish & Portuguese, German & Russian, African-African American
Studies, Comparative Literature and History.
-The University of California is the largest institution of higher learning in
the world, with renowned research and library facilities.
-In addition to its degree programs, students can pursue Designated Emphases in
Second Language Acquisition, Critical Theory, African/African American Studies,
Feminist Theory and Research, and Studies in Performance and Practice.
-Students have the opportunity to participate in scholarly exchange and study
abroad through UC's Education Abroad Programs, with centers in Paris, Bordeaux,
Lyon and Grenoble.
- The department also offers partial travel support opportunities for conference
presentation and research.
