"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Dublin offers a number of Research Studentships for full-time PhD students in:

-Linguistics
-Applied Linguistics
-Phonetics and Speech Science
-Clinical Speech and Language Studies
-Deaf Studies

The School's Research Studentships include the payment of annual tuition fees at
EU student levels for a maximum of four years and an annual stipend of 8,000
EUR. A separate studentship is available under the College's Postgraduate
Research Studentship scheme. This studentship will pay annual tuition fees at EU
or non-EU level as appropriate for a maximum of three years and an annual
stipend of 8,000 EUR. A limited amount of teaching may be expected of students
in receipt of either type of studentship.
