"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Support Description: Applications are invited for two 3-year MPhil/PhD studentships funded by the ESRC (UK Economic and Social Research Council). Research areas include speech, language and communication; acquisition of first and later-learned languages; experimental phonetics, linguistics and pragmatics; developmental and acquired language and communication disorders; and impacts of hearing impairments on language and speech. The studentships are subject to the ESRC’s nationality and residency restrictions, which typically require 3 years of prior UK residency.
