"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Support Description: Grants for PhD Students at the Open University of Catalonia. Machine Translation and Natural Language Processing. The IN3 (Internet Interdisciplinary Institute of the Open University of Catalonia) offers grants for following the Information and Knowledge Society Doctoral Programme. The IN3-UOC Doctoral Theses Grants Programme require full-time dedicationfrom the student and being physically present in the research institute’s facilities in Barcelona (Spain). The maximum duration of the grants is four years. Grants require annual renewal. Renewal is contingent on the students benefitting from such grants achieving the training and research objectives established in each case. One of these objectives is to complete the organised research period within a maximum of three years. Another is to carry out research papers derived from the doctoral thesis. The successful candidate will join the Language Processing Research Group (http://lpg.uoc.edu/) and the doctoral area called Digital Culture Studies > Applied Linguistics in the Information Society (http://in3.uoc.edu/opencms_portalin3/opencms/en/doctorat/convocatoria_acces/oferta_places/societat_informacio/ESTUDIS_CULT_DIG). Deadline for Applications: Applications should be received by January 31th 2013. Candidate Profiles: Applications are invited preferably with one of the following qualifications or equivalent: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Translation, Linguistics or related fields. The selection of admitted students to the Doctoral Programme’s research period is based solely on scientific and academic qualification. Apart from the admission requirements which the students must necessarily fulfil, the University takes into account firstly, the candidates’ academic record and secondly, how far their training, experience and research interests adapt to the areas of knowledge or themes associated to the Doctoral Programme. The prior scientific production of the future students is also taken into account. Areas of Interest: The candidates should be interested in one of the following areas: machine translation, automatic generation of WordNets and textual entailment.
