"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Support Description: Linguistics at Newcastle University is able to submit two nominations for doctoral studentships as part of the ESRC (Economic and Social Sciences Research Council) North-East Doctoral Training Centre. Home (UK) students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for a minimum of three years are eligible for a full award comprising fees and an annual, tax free stipend of £13,590 (2012/13 rates). Other EU students are eligible for a fees-only award. PhD projects must be from one of the following areas: Applied Linguistics Clinical Linguistics Sociolinguistics Language Acquisition / Bilingualism
