"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Support Description: The Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University invites applications for graduate admission for Fall 2014 from qualified students for the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in the Cognitive Science of Language with a competitive funding available on several projects in the area of syntax-semantics interface.

The theoretical linguistics projects are situated within an interdisciplinary program which includes faculty from Humanities, Science, and Health Sciences. Our strong research focus includes expertise in Corpus and Computational Linguistics, Experimental Psycholinguistics, Clinical Linguistics, and Cognitive Neuroscience of Language. The breadth of research areas provides a rich environment for graduate training and allows for flexibility so that students can design their studies around their own areas of interest.
