The University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, has a fully funded position for a PhD candidate vacant for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD).

The position is attached to the research center CASTL (Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics) within the Department of Language and Linguistics. The project which the PhD candidate shall work on, and which must be outlined in the application, therefore must connect to research done at CASTL (see http://castl.uit.no). The core areas of CASTL are syntax, phonology, and first language acquisition. Applicants with projects in phonology are especially encouraged to apply, but projects in all relevant areas will be given full consideration.
The position is also linked to the department’s participation in the National Research School in linguistics and philology (http://uit.no/prosjekter/prosjekt?p_document_id=317978), and the PhD candidate is expected to take part in activities which will be organized at a national level (mini courses, summer schools and so on, at least once a year).
The PhD position is funded for four years, including a 25% teaching position, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the CASTL PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD Candidate shall participate in CASTL’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. This position requires a Master’s degree in general linguistics (2 years) or another linguistic subject.
The candidate will be selected from among the applicants by a scientific committee. The most important documents for the evaluation are the master's thesis or equivalent, any other scientific papers, and the project description (maximum 10 pages), which should outline a proposal for a PhD project which is appropriate for supervision and completion at CASTL. Emphasis will be placed on quality of previous work and on the suitability of the candidate and the project for the research center.
The PhD candidate must be willing to perform teaching duties at all levels within the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in the field of his or her qualifications.
