The joint PhD program in linguistics of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv University offers a unique opportunity to study linguistics with some of the top researchers in linguistics in a highly interactive setting. The program of study is structured and rigorous, consisting of formal coursework, attendance of intensive research workshops (in which the students’ work is discussed with other students and faculty), and preparation of a dissertation. The program has five tracks: Syntax, Semantics, Phonology, Computational Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Usage-Based Linguistics. The main goal of the program is to lead the admitted students to a successful career in research as well as teaching of linguistics.
In the first year of the program, the students take intensive courses in syntax, semantics, and phonology. After their first/second year, they then choose their track and coordinate their study plan with the heads of the respective track. An important component of the school is the annual Winter School, where several top researchers in different subfields of linguistics come and teach a one-week course: Winter School 2015 was on Exhaustivity (visiting faculty Leon Bergen, Raj Singh, Jesse Snedeker, and Benjamin Spector), Winter School 2016 was on Phonology (visiting faculty Frans Adriaans, Maria Gouskova, and Sharon Pepperkamp).
The students at the Hebrew University will be enrolled in the Linguistics Department, http://en.linguistics.huji.ac.il/, and affiliated with the Language, Logic and Cognition Center, https://scholars.huji.ac.il/llcc/.
Admission to the program is highly competitive and is accompanied by a generous funding package.
The applicants must hold a BA (or equivalent) degree (or expect to obtain one before commencing their studies). They should also have a strong academic record and strong interest in research. Since the language of instruction is English, the applicants should be able to demonstrate good proficiency in English. Applicants will be evaluated by the Admissions Committee based on their past academic performance and their promise. Applicants are required to submit the following materials:
