PhD Studentship
The Nature of Speech Impairment in Mind
Applications are invited for a 3 year PhD studentship funded by the Scottish
MND Association to explore how different motor, linguistic, cognitive and
behavioural factors (such as dysarthria, apraxia of speech, phonological
deficits as well as loss of initiation) contribute to speech production deficits
observed in many MND patients.
The successful candidate will be working under the supervision of Dr.
Thomas H. Bak (cognitive neurology) and co-supervision of Dr. Sharon
Abrahams (clinical neuropsychology) and Prof. Bob Ladd (linguistics). The
environment of the University of Edinburgh and the recently established Euan
McDonald Centre for MND research provide cutting edge scientific research
and interdisciplinary collaboration as well as a thoroughly designed
educational programme.
Criteria
Candidates with linguistic, psychological, or medical degrees are encouraged
to apply. A relevant MSc would be considered an advantage. The
interdisciplinary character of the study requires the willingness to learn new
theories, techniques and approaches.
The studentship will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU level plus an annual
stipend for maintenance. Applicants must comply with the University of
Edinburgh requirements for postgraduate study.

1. Complete a University of Edinburgh PhD application including all
supporting documentation, a copy of your CV and a statement outlining why
you are interested in the advertised studentship. You should also include
the fact that you are interested in the scholarship under section F of the
application form.
