Job description:
Research Assistant position within the project "Discourse Parsing for
Summarization and Sentiment Detection," a project funded by a grant to Maite
Taboada from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
(NSERC). The project aims at building a parser that identifies discourse
relations in text, with two applications in mind: summarization and sentiment

The successful applicant will demonstrate an interest in one or more of the
following areas: computational linguistics, discourse/coherence relations,
corpus linguistics. Although the position is designed to develop research
skills, priority will be given to candidates with background in computational
linguistics, and in particular with programming experience. The student is free
to pursue his or her own thesis research in other areas, but there are also
opportunities to combine thesis/dissertation work with the RA work.
The initial research stipend is for one year at the following levels: CAD$12,000
(MA) or CAD$15,000 (PhD), renewable depending on performance and funding
availability. The successful applicant is also eligible for travel funding and
additional forms of support available to SFU students, including teaching
assistantships and marker positions. For more information on funding, please
