"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Size: Medium (11-25 students)
Program Description: The Graduate Program in Linguistics, University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras, offers two degrees: (1) an M.A. in Linguistics and (2) a Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics. Courses are taught in Spanish by linguists from the Departments of English, Hispanic Studies and Foreign Languages. Readings are in English and Spanish. The Program publishes the UPR Working Papers in Linguistics, and students are allowed to take up to nine credits in the departments of English and Hispanic Studies.
