"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Description: We would like to announce the start of a new Master's degree programme in 'English Language and Linguistics' at the University of Freiburg from April 2008.

The Department of English of Freiburg University is an internationally prominent centre of research in corpus linguistics, variation studies and functional-typological linguistics. In addition to a generally stimulating academic working environment, students profit from an excellent library, state-of-the-art computational infrastructure and a recently re-equipped phonetics, audio and video laboratory.

The following three teaching modules are at the centre of this research-based Master:

Module 1: Essentials of Modern English Structure
Module 2: Present-Day English: Regional, Social and Stylistic Variability
Module 3: Language Change and the History of English

Depending on their interests, students will specialise in one of the following areas of concentration:

Module 4: Discourse and Communication
Module 5: Psycholinguistics: Language Acquisition and Bilingualism
Module 6: Corpus Linguistics and Language Technology
Module 7: Schools of Thought in English Linguistics

Applications are invited from students with an undergraduate degree in English or linguistics and a fluent command of English (TOEFL-score of 620+, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency or equivalent). The registration deadline is 30 November 2007. Further details are available at:
