"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Size: Small (1-10 students)
Program Description: The University of Zurich offers an innovative Master program combining linguistics in English, German and the Romance languages with methods and techniques from Computational Linguistics.

The Specialized Master in Multilingual Text Analysis has been designed for students who want to complement their interest in linguistics with obtaining a qualification in language technology. It is also suitable for students of Computational Linguistics who want to gain a multilingual perspective. Languages of instruction are English, German and French.

Selected topics:
* Contrastive studies across languages and varieties
* Alignment and Annotation of parallel corpora
* Machine translation
* Cross-language information retrieval
* Language technology for translation science
* Multilingual databases
* Multilingual access to the media

The program will accommodate students with different backgrounds including students with little computational or little linguistics background. The multilinguality of Switzerland, the cosmopolitan flair of Zurich, plus international study weeks with our partner universities abroad provide for a unique academic experience.
