Program Description: The program at Ohio University offers a good balance of practice and theory, providing students with valuable training in ESL/EFL teaching, computer technology for instructional purposes, and applied linguistics research. Students in our program are privileged with modern facilities and ample work areas, and many of our students also have the opportunity to teach linguistics, languages, or ESL to children or adults. A B.A. and M.A. degree in linguistics. Our M.A.-TESOL program concentrates on the training of teachers of English as a second/foreign language for domestic and international settings. Approximately half of the coursework is in linguistics (the study of the general properties of language), and the other half is in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages).
Available Financial Aid: Assistantships are available to teach Linguistics, English as a second language, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, and Swahili. The nine-month teaching stipend is normally $7,500 or more, and is accompanied by a tuition scholarship that covers the majority of academic fees. (Students with a tuition scholarship will end up paying only about $1,000 per year in un-remittable academic fees.) Tuition scholarships and graduate assistantships are available to students with a strong academic background who are not eligible for a teaching assistantship.
