"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Description: An M.A. degree in linguistics and a linguistic Ph.D. thesis topic are a prerequisite for a successful application to the program. The M.A. degree can be either a major or a minor in one of the following: General Linguistics, English Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, German Linguistics, Scandinavian Linguistics, Indo-European Studies, Classical Philology, Oriental Studies, Philosophy, Romance Linguistics and Slavic Linguistics. At least 30 ECTS points need to be earned in M.A. courses with a linguistic focus.
