Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Description: The program combines the study of a foreign language (English, German or Danish) with the acquisition of theoretical knowledge on and hands-on skills in user-centered document and interaction design. Besides high-level language skills in the foreign language, students learn
• to design, revise and improve organization-internal and -external documents (leaflets, webpages, brochures, letters, forms etc.) on the basis of psycholinguistic, cognitive and linguistic knowledge about communication,
• to analyze users’ interactions with new technologies, thereby contributing to technology design and development,
• empirical methods to carry out user studies, including the use of participatory methods.
The program includes one semester at one of our partner universities or a university of your choice, where the students can specialize in one of the many applications of communication design in business, technical and intercultural communication. Alternatively, students can carry out internships in companies or research projects, for instance, on human-robot interaction.
Sønderborg is a friendly town located close to the Danish-German border, and the university is beautifully situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea.
Available Financial Aid: The program is free for EU citizens.
