"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Description: The Centre of Linguistics and English offers M.A. Programmes in English and Linguistics and an integrated M.Phil/Ph.D. programme of Research. While in English the special focus of the Centre is on courses in African, Austrialian and Canadian Literatures, Literary Theory, Indian Poetic Tradition, semiotics and Gender Studies, in Linguistics speicial course are offered on Grammatical Models and Theory, Language Typology, Indian Grammatical Tradition, Language Impairment, Neurolinguistics, Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics and Theory and Methodology of Translation. The Centre has a very vibrant research programme offering students an opportunity to write their M.Phil and Ph.D. dissertations in the above mentioned areas and over 150 M.Phil and Ph.D. dissertations have already been completed by the students of the Centre, many of which have been published. The Centre also runs specially comissioned programmes in English for specific purposes for various students and diplomats at the instance of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and other agencies.
