"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Description: The linguistics program is staffed by faculty from various departments at the University of Missouri-Columbia, including English, Anthropology, Communication, Communication Science & Disorders, Philosophy, Psychological Sciences, and Romance Languages and Literatures. The program offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Linguistics, an Undergraduate minor in Linguistics, a Graduate minor in Linguistics, and MA and PhD degree programs with emphasis in linguistics and language are available in some cooperating departments.
