| Program Description: |
This postgraduate programme represents a one year full-time (or part-time) advanced study of the current state of scholarship in World Englishes. It provides an opportunity for developing students' understanding of the discipline of linguistics, in a global literary and cultural setting; for introducing students to new and evolving sub-disciplines relevant to the study of English world-wide; for enhancing students' knowledge of the workings of language and communication in a variety of global contexts; for developing understanding of critical and cultural theory, and applying this knowledge to a range of international literatures; and for developing critical and analytical powers in the context of the uses of English globally.
Students take 180 credits worth of modules, including the dissertation element (60c). Students are required to take the module Descriptive Linguistic Analysis (30c). Students can choose additional 90 credits from a range of taught elective modules. To be awarded the MA World Englishes, at least 120 credits (including the 60c dissertation) must be in modules designated as specialised in the topic of ‘world English'. The degree equips students with a very high level of knowledge and skills in applied linguistics, critical and adaptable thinking in an international context. It is an excellent preparation for doctoral research study. |

International students (non-Chinese passport holders) may apply for one of 15 partial scholarships. These are worth 30,000 CNY (33% of the tuition fee).
