Jost Gippert: Our Featured Linguist!

"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Program Description: The degree in Applied Languages trains professionals qualified to manage multilingual communication, who are specialised in the field of employment. It leads to a command of the student's own languages and foreign languages, both in the most important verbal areas (writing, correcting, editing, translating, oral expression and cultural mediation) and in handling resources (terminology and documentation management, applied computing, data gathering and processing methods), and reflection on language. The degree enables holders to specialise in any of the following areas: educational environments (learning and teaching languages), business environments (management of specialised multilingual communication), social environments (cultural mediation, linguistic normalisation), description and comparison of languages (both the student's own and foreign languages) and technological applications (development and management of computer programmes applied to linguistic tasks). In short, this interdisciplinary degree course provides the skills required for working as a linguistic technician in institutions and businesses in various areas, press offices, communication departments, text editing, cultural mediation work and language teaching.
