"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Size: Medium (11-25 students)
Program Description: The Department of Linguistics in Geneva offers a 1-year (30 ECTS credits) graduate program in Linguistics to students who hold an MA degree in Linguistics or an equivalent diploma. Courses are in English and French.
The program has three components:
(a) Methods of analysis (6 credits)
We offer three accelerated introductory or 'update” courses in the areas of specialization in the department, namely Syntax, Pragmatics and Computational Linguistics. Students are required to take two out of three courses.
(b) Specialization (12 credits)
2 seminars.
(c) Research (12 credits)
Attendance and active participation in the departmental research seminars and the submission of a 25-page research paper. .
