"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Program Description: Aimed at: BA graduates in English Language and Literature or in such related disciplines as Linguistics, Media Studies, German Language, Humanities and the like, who wish to specialise in this area of knowledge and acquire a thorough theoretical and practical training, leading to an internationally recognized PhD qualification.

Aims: The PhD course in English Language and Literature has as its general aim to train and equip graduates in English Language and Literature (and related fields) to attain the highest qualification in the areas of English Language, specifically in the areas of English Linguistics (present-day and historical) and/or the Cultures and Literatures of English-speaking countries.
