The 2003 meeting will again be held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Linguistic Society of America. The meeting will take place at the Atlanta Hilton, Atlanta, GA between 2-5 January, 2003. Further details about the meeting will be provided in the next newsletter.

     As in the past, we invite papers relating to any aspect of the history of the language sciences. All presenters must be members of the association (membership form, p. 17).  Papers will be 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts may be submitted as hard copies or as file attachments (MS Word only). The length of an abstract should not exceed 200 words. Do not use smaller than 12-point type for the abstracts. The deadline for abstracts is 1 September, 2002. Late abstracts will not be considered.

Vivien Anne Law, Lady Shackleton, was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia.on 22 March 1954. She graduated from McGill University in 1974 with an honours degree in Classics and Germanic Languages, and received her PhD from Cambridge in 1979. At Cambridge she was a Research Fellow, then a Fellow, of Sidney Sussex College from 1980 until 1997. She was Lecturer in the History of Linguistics from 1984 to 1997, and in 1998 was promoted to Reader in the History of Linguistic Thought. In 1999 she was made a Fellow of the British Academy, the highest scholarly accolade in her adopted country.

Her reputation as the leading scholar in early medieval grammar of her generation in the English speaking world was made early, with the publication of The Insular Latin Grammarians in 1982, and was reinforced with Wisdom, Authority and Grammar in the Seventh Century: Decoding Virgilius Maro Grammaticus (1995) and many important articles and contributions to collective volumes, some of which were republished in her Grammar and Grammarians in the Early Middle Ages (1997). Her scholarly interests were in fact wide ranging, and often surprised and impressed those who associated her strictly with her main area of specialisation.

The friendship which she and her husband, Sir Nicholas Shackleton, had with Robert Henry Robins (1921-2000) consoled and sustained him in his last lonely years as a widower. When, at my invitation, she participated in a memorial panel to Robins at the September 2000 meeting of the Henry Sweet Society in Edinburgh, she herself was already well into the battle with the breast cancer that would ultimately claim her during her sleep on 20 February 2002. The train journey to Edinburgh cannot have been physically easy for her, but she clearly felt a bounden duty to honour the memory of the friend whom she would join all too soon.

In 2001 Vivien asked me to serve as external examiner for the history of linguistics courses at Cambridge. When the time came in June to meet with her to agree marks, she was already too ill to meet in person. Instead we spent nearly two hours on the telephone discussing the individual students’ exams. In the course of this conversation, which I shall always remember, I learned a great deal about what Vivien valued in the teaching of the history of linguistics, what topics she thought were particularly important for students to know about and why. She engaged deeply with what her students wrote, and when they misrepresented something from one of her lectures, she neither scorned it nor ridiculed it, but sought to learn from the misunderstanding. She was clearly both a wise and a generous teacher.

Hers was a rare combination of intense intelligence and tireless scholarship with youthfulness, grace, beauty, humour and utter lack of pretence. Seldom does a deeply private and inward person listen so attentively and communicate so easily as Vivien did, and this drew people to her, though few felt they ever really pierced the shell and knew her intimately. Yet that added to her mystique and charm. Although everyone in the UK history of linguistics community was aware of her grave illness, the announcement of her death nevertheless came as a profound shock, as it did to her many friends across North and South America, Europe, Asia and beyond.

Le colloque portera sur les problèmes liés au bilinguisme dans la constitution des terminologies grammaticales grecque et latine. Il ne s'agira pas d'étudier ces terminologies pour elles-mêmes, mais dans leurs relations mutuelles.
Les approches pourront être sémasiologiques ou onomasiologiques. Elles mettront en lumière les divers aspects formels et conceptuels des correspondances, y compris les approximations, les remotivations et les contre-sens. Elles s'intéresseront tout autant aux créations éphémères qu'à la terminologie installée, à l'origine de la terminologie moderne.
Les communications seront de 30 minutes et seront suivies de 10 minutes de discussion. Les langues du colloque seront le français, l'anglais, l'allemand, l'espagnol et l'italien.
Les frais de séjour seront pris en charge par l'organisaiton du colloque. Sont prévues une excursion touristique dans la région lyonnaise ainsi qu'une visite du Vieux Lyon.

4. The First International Conference on Missionary Linguistics, Oslo University, 
     March 13-16, 2003

After the discovery of the New World the Europeans began to establish their hegemony in a new continent. European expansion, colonisation and christianization of a large number and variety of Amerindian tribes was accompanied by the study and recording of the native languages of the Americas. In the same period, Christian missionary activities escalated in Asia, especially the Far East, and in Russia, and a little later in Africa. In the early 19th century, the Pacific became a new "America" for missionary linguistics. This congress aims to outline the state of research done in the field. The subjects are to some extent limited in time (focusing primarily on the period 1492-1850) but not in space. This conference aims particularly at inter-relating grammars written in different languages (Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, Dutch, etc.), by missionaries of different orders (Dominicans, Franciscans, Jesuits, etc.), and in different continents. We wish to 'globalise' the discipline, crossing national and linguistic frontiers in order to create new views and to open new horizons. Subscriptions and more information on page:
