Call for Papers (2nd notice)
NAAHoLS at LSA

The 2005 NAAHoLS meeting will again be held in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America, the American Dialect Society, the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas, and the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics.  Featured plenary speakers this year include Sandra Thompson, Carlota Smith, Jane Hill, Mary Ann Willie, and Mark Aronoff.

The meeting will take place at the Hyatt Regency  Hotel and the Double Tree Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico between 5-8 January, 2006.  Further details about the meeting are provided below.

As in the past, we invite papers relating to any aspect of the history of the language sciences.  All presenters must be members of the association (contact the NAAHoLS Treasurer for details).  Papers will be 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion.  Abstracts may be submitted as hard copies or as file attachments (MS Word only).  The length of the abstract should not exceed 500 words -- a shorter (200 word) abstract will also be requested for the meeting handbook.  The deadline for abstracts is 1 September 2005.

80th Annual Meeting

The 80th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and the Doubletree Hotel, Albuquerque, 5-8 January 2006.  The American Dialect Society, the American Name Society, the North American Association for the History of the Language Sciences, the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics, and the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas will meet concurrently with the LSA.

The titles of all papers and presentations will appear in the October 2005 LSA Bulletin.  The Bulletin will be published in late October and will be available at the LSA website at about the same time.

Other Events

Thursday, 5 January, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm  The Officers and Executive Committee will meet.

Friday, 6 January, 5:30 – 7:00 pm  Annual Business Meeting.  The 8th Bienniel Leonard Bloomfield Award, and 2nd Kenneth L. Hale Award, and the 6th Victoria A. Fromkin Prize will be presented.
 

Hotel Accommodations

The Hyatt Regency Albuquerque and Doubletree Hotel have reserved a block of rooms for those attending the 2006 meeting.  The special LSA room rates for both hotels are:

Single/Double/Triple/Quad:  $92.00

The Hyatt Regency reservation telephone numbers are: (505) 842-1234 and (800) 233-1234.  The Doubletree Hotel reservation numbers are: (505) 247-3344 and (888) 223-4113.  All reservations are subject to availability if received after 14 December 2005.  to get the special room rates, you must identify yourself as attending the LSA meeting.
 

Registration

Everyone attending the meeting is expected to register.  Compliance is important for keeping our fees affordable.  Only those who register will be allowed to present papers, use the Job Placement Service, or attend plenary presentations.

Advance Registration:

Only LSA members may register in advance.  Members planning to attend may preregister when they renew their membership for 2006 or by sending the preregistration tearout (see LSA Bulletin) or a photocopy with a check for registration by 5 December 2005.  Preregistrations with credit card payment may be faxed to (202) 835-1717.  The Secretariat strongly encourages you to preregister by 5 December but will, in any case, stop accepting preregistrations on 16 December.  Preregistration fees for the 2006 Annual Meeting are:

Regular Members:  $100.00
Emeritus Members:  $75.00
Student Members:  $40.00
Unemployed Members:  $40.00

Preregistrants may claim their badges and handbooks at the registration desk in the meeting area of the hotel beginning at 11:00 am on 5 January.

On-site registration will open at 11:00 am on 5 January and will be open all day 6 and 7 January.  The on-site registration fees for the 2006 Annual Meeting are:

Regular Members:  $125.00
Emeritus Members:  $85.00
Student Members:  $50.00
Unemployed Members:  $50.00
1-day registration:  $65.00

Upcoming Conferences

1) Tenth International Conference on the History of the Language Sciences (ICHoLS X)
    Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, 1-5 September 2005

Over the Labor Day weekend in early September, the University of Illinois will host ICHoLS X,  triennial conference on the history of the language sciences.  This event is being held in North America for the first time since 1993.  Approximately 100 speakers from 25 countries will present papers on all aspects of the history of grammatical thought.  Plenary speakers include John Joseph of the University of Edinburgh and Michael Silverstein of the University of Chicago.  Additional information, along with the registration form, may be found at: http://www.french.uiuc.edu/ICHOLS/

3) The 14th World Congress of Applied Linguistics (AILA 2005)
    Madison, Wisconsin, 24-29 July 2005

Proposals will be evaluated and the conference will be organized according to the following areas of interest: 

Adult language learning, Child language, Communication in the professions, Contrastive linguistics and error analysis, Discourse analysis, Educational technology and language learning, Evaluation, assessment, and testing, Foreign language teaching methodology and teacher education, Forensic linguistics, Immersion education, Interpreting and translating, Language and business, Language and ecology, Language and education in multilingual settings, Language and gender, Language and the media, Language contact and language change, Language for special purposes, Language planning, Learner autonomy in language learning, Lexicography and lexicology, Literacy, Mother tongue education, Psycholinguistics, Rhetoric and stylistics, Second language acquisition, Sign language 

INDIVIDUAL PAPERS: 20 minutes for presentation; 10 minutes for discussion.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS: Posters are for one-on-one discussion of work in progress. Posters are effective for presenting data visually (charts, graphs, or tables). A block of time will be designated when presenters are available to discuss their posters. Specific guidelines for posters will be provided upon acceptance.

SYMPOSIA: Symposia are scheduled for three-hour blocks. Organizers of symposia may divide their time as they choose, but time should be allocated for opening and closing remarks, presentations, discussants (if included), and extended audience response. Organizers serve as the liaisons between participants and the program committee.
