Report to
Working Group on Metadata re the OLAC meta data set
N. Louanna
Furbee - 14 June 2001
Caveat: I'm no kind of HTML/SMLl/XML
programmer. Some of my
comments may
be naive.
I went
through this with the potential of archiving materials from
Tojolab'al
Maya and Chiwere Siouan in mind.
Contributor
- I see this as the "acknowledgements" section, plus in
some
instances a place to recognize native language consultants who
were sources
more than collaborators in the work.
Add:
informant/consultant
Format.cpu -
This seems to be the hardware requirement. In Mac case,
however, the
Mac hardware often run PC software, so a little overlap with
Format.os. Mac-wise, there are several OSs in use;
PowerPC, add 8100,
G3, G4; they
will all have 64k but might need 128k.
Format.encoding
- Add new names for languages.
Format.
markup - "Yes" is my answer to the query under "to do".
Format.os. Add Mac OSs, Virtual PC on Max, etc.
Language - I
suggest using the entire name(s) written out of
language(s). There are 6000 plus languages. Two-letter designators can
only specify
676 languages. Code readability is also important.
Intellectual
property rights - Need digital watermarking; tiers of
access for
materials (e.g. family, tribe, subgroup, etc.); accord
with
indigenous speakers' rights.
Source - add
fieldnotes.
Subject - I
like idea of freeform. Attributes,
kinds of text,
elicitation,
genres, etc. Also audio, video,
photos. Resource links to
component
pieces of a complex work (e.g., analyses of both gestural and
audio parts
of a
video, perhaps with a coordinated tape recording and
video
recording as source.
Subject.language.
- Tojolab'al or Tojolab'al Maya; Chiwere or Chiwere
Siouan
(dialects: Báxoje, Ñutachi,
Chiwere). Chiwere also written
Jiwere.
Type -
Differentiate digital and analog video and audio; animations;
accommodate
photos (digital or not, negatives, positive, slides)
Type.data -
Again, the video/audio combinations.
