"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Media Body: Here is an article which fascinated me. Every single one of the linguistic
truisms about linguistic equality we hold so dear are taken to task, by a
non-linguist. And I found myself thinking that, even though he doesn't
know all the details or the finer points of the theories he discusses, he
shows a real, though non-expert, understanding of them. I came away
thinking: he'll make linguists mad, but this guy's got a point.
