"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The workshop intends to provide a forum for discussing a number of topics covered by Professor Nunzio La Fauci in his publications (the complete list is available at http://www.nunziolafauci.it/).

Professor La Fauci earned his degree at the University of Palermo in 1975 and then studied linguistics in Pisa (with Riccardo Ambrosini) and in Paris (with Maurice Gross). He taught Theoretical Linguistics at the Università di Palermo (Facoltà di Lettere, 1981-1987), Dialectology at the Università della Calabria (1988-1989), and General Linguistics at the Università di Palermo (Facoltà di Scienze della formazione, 1989-1997). He then took the position of Professor of Italian Linguistics at the Universität Zürich (UZH), which he currently holds. Professor La Fauci’s research in morphosyntax (his favorite area) spans subjects such as: antonomasia, auxiliation patterns, existential constructions, impersonal constructions, non-linear grammars, parameters, passives, past participle agreement in Romance, proper nouns, and support verbs.
