"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The 13th biennial New Zealand Language and Society Conference will be held at the University of Auckland, 28-29 November 2012. The theme for the conference this year is ‘Minority Speech Communities in Focus’.

Keynote Speakers:

Umberto Ansaldo (University of Hong Kong)
Felicity Meakins (University of Queensland)

The conference will be held at the University of Auckland, Arts 1 Building, 14a Symonds St, Auckland. It will run Wed 28 November and Thurs 29 November. On Friday 30 November, there will be an ASSTA Workshop on ‘Phonetic Analysis of Rhythm in Indigenous Languages’, with Guest Speaker Amalia Arvaniti, UC, San Diego. More details about the workshop will be released shortly including information on where and how to make submissions.
