"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: After the success of the previous three conferences held in 2007, 2009, and 2011, the Department of English Literature and Linguistics, Qatar University, is pleased to announce its 4th Linguistics in the Gulf Conference (LGC) to be held on March 17-18, 2013.

The aim of the Linguistics in the Gulf Conference (LGC) is to provide a platform for scholars and professionals, whose research interests focus on language in the Gulf region, to share their ongoing research and expertise and to promote the study of linguistics in the region. The conference also aims to create opportunities for scholars to collaborate in research involving linguists working in institutions across the region.
