"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. The Institute of Languages, the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir is pleased to announce the 1st International Kashmir Conference on Linguistics 2013 to be held on 15-16 May 2013. This two-day interdisciplinary conference provides a meeting place for researchers and practitioners in the areas of theoretical and applied linguistics to present and share their research findings in a stimulating and interactive environment. The conference aims to promote collaborative and networking opportunities between scholars and practitioners and to advance new perspectives and reflect on current research and practice in various subfields of linguistics with special focus on language endangerment.
