"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Pre-conference workshop at the CALICO conference 2013 in Hawaii

This workshop will explore the current state and future directions of ICALL (Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning) and discuss its potential impact on second/foreign language instruction and acquisition. The workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners who are working on ICALL related projects as well as colleagues from other disciplines are interested in ICALL and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in a broader sense.

The workshop is organized by the ICALL Special Interest Group of CALICO, currently chaired by Peter Wood and Ken Petersen.
