"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: The FAJL conferences provide the primary venue for cutting-edge theoretical work in all domains of Japanese linguistics. The conference highlights the contributions made to the understanding of human language in general by the study of the Japanese language. Previous FAJL conferences have taken place in the United States, Japan, and Germany. FAJL7 will take place in Tokyo, Japan, at ICU (International Christian University) and at NINJAL (National Institute of Japanese Linguistics and Language).
