"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: On Saturday May 11, 2013 the Linguistic Society of Belgium is organizing its annual linguists’ day. This year the event is hosted by the KU Leuven.

Attendance is free and open to everyone, but only members can give a paper (in German, English, French or Dutch, on any linguistic topic). The annual membership fee is 40 euros and includes one issue of the Belgian Journal of Linguistics (or 20 euros a year if you do not want to receive the journal) and membership offers a wide range of advantages: see http://www.bkl-cbl.be.
