"Buenos dias", "buenas noches" -- this was the first words in a foreign language I heard in my life, as a three-year old boy growing up in developing post-war Western Germany, where the first gastarbeiters had arrived from Spain. Fascinated by the strange sounds, I tried to get to know some more languages, the only opportunity being TV courses of English and French -- there was no foreign language education for pre-teen school children in Germany yet in those days. Meeting Description: Since 2007, the Cornell UnderLings has hosted an annual Cornell Undergraduate Linguistics Colloquium (CULC) in Spring (usually in March or April) to provide an opportunity for undergraduate linguistics majors from all over the world (mostly from North America) to present their research and exchange ideas with one another. Some keynote speakers we have had in the past colloquiums include: Prof. Bruce Hayes (UCLA), Prof. Norvin Richards (MIT), Prof. John Hale (Cornell), Profs. Molly Diesing and Sally McConnell-Ginet (Cornell).
