Optionality and Variation in Multilingual Syntax

Conference URL: https://leahbauke.wordpress.com/workshop-i/

The network on Optionality and Variation in Multilingual Syntax (OpVaMS) will hold its first workshop at the University of Wuppertal (Germany) from April 23rd to 25th.

The network will investigate the role of optionality and variation in syntactic structures in multilingual contexts, such as L2 acquisition contexts, bilingual contexts and heritage language contexts. Research questions that will be addressed are:

What is the role of optionality and variation in multilingual contexts and how can the two concepts be systematically distinguished and analyzed?
What is the role of syntactic variation in first language contexts and in how far is that different from second language contexts and from simultaneous bilingualism?
Can syntactic variation be observed in all these contexts?
Are there any differences in the effects that syntactic variation generates in these three acquisition contexts?
What are such effects, i.e. are they reinforcing, counterbalancing, leveling, …?

We invite abstracts for speed talks (15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of discussion) on these questions. We are interested in submissions on all kinds of languages and from various theoretical frameworks. Abstracts are limited to 500 words (excluding references).

The workshop will additionally feature talks by the network members Laia Aranaus Gil, Leah Bauke, Holger Hopp, Tanja Kupisch, Tom Rankin, Tom Roeper, Jacopo Torregrossa, Dennis Wegner and Marit Westergaard.

Invited speakers are tba.
