Since the publication of the still very valuable Biblioteca hist�rica
de la filolog�a by Cipriano Mu�oz y Manzano, conde de la Vi�aza,
(Madrid, 1893), our knowledge of the history of the study of the
Spanish language has grown considerably. It has been the purpose of
BICRES I (from the beginnings to 1600), published in 1994 in the same
series, to bring already available bibliographical information
together with the more recent research findings, scattered in many
places, books and articles and published during the past one hundred
years. Now, the second volume, covering the years from 1601 to 1700,
has been published, according to the same principles as the first one.
Years of work in the major librairies of Spain and other European
countries have gone into this new bibliography in order to offer as
exhaustive as possible a description of all Spanish grammars and
dictionaries, histories of the Spanish language as well studies
devoted to particular facets of its evolution in the 17th century.
BICRES II brings together in chronological order close to 1,300
titles. Access to the bibliographical information is facilitated by
several detailed indexes, such as author index, short title index,
index of places of production, index of printers and publishers, and a
index of locations of the books described.
Desde la publicaci�n de la muy meritoria y a�n hoy �til Biblioteca
hist�rica de la filolog�a castellana (Madrid, 1893) de Cipriano Mu�oz
y Manzano, conde de la Vi�aza, nuestros cono-cimientos sobre la
historia de la ling��stica espa�ola se han ensanchado
considerable-mente. Fue el prop�sito de BICRES I ("desde los comienzos
hasta 1600"), que se public� en 1994 en esta misma serie, sumar, a los
datos bibliogr�ficos conocidos, la informaci�n m�s reciente aparecida
durante los �ltimos cien a�os en los m�s diversos lugares.
BICRES II presenta la informaci�n correspondiente a los a�os 1601-1700
manteniendo los mismos principios metodol�gicos que fueron empleados
en el primer volumen.
Para terminar esta nueva bibliograf�a han sido necesarios a�os de
trabajo en bibliotecas espa�olas y europeas. De esta manera se ha
conseguido reunir la m�xima cantidad disponible de datos sobre
gram�ticas y diccio-narios de la lengua espa�ola publicados en el
siglo XVII, as� como sobre historias de la lengua espa�ola y estudios
dedicados a los m�s variados aspecto de su desarrollo.
La Bibliograf�a cronol�gica de la ling��stica, la gram�tica y la
lexicograf�a del espa�ol (BICRES II) ofrece, en orden cronol�gico,
apoximadamente 1.300 t�tulos. Una serie de �ndices detallados
(autores, t�tulos abreviados, lugares de publicaci�n, impresores y
edito-riales y, finalmente, paraderos) facilita el acceso a la
infomaci�n bibliogr�fica.

THE FIRST ZAPOTEC-ENGLISH DICTIONARY IS PUBLISHED
The UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center announced last week that it has
published the first dictionary with English definitions of a Zapotec language.
The dictionary is of the Zapotec language as it is spoken in the pueblo of
San Lucas Quiavin� in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, and by many immigrants
to Los Angeles. The language was never written down or studied before the
beginning of research at UCLA in 1993. The Zapotecan language family is the
largest indigenous language group in Oaxaca, and one of the largest in
Mexico.
The authors are Pamela Munro, a professor of linguistics at UCLA and a
leading scholar of indigenous languages of the Americas, and Felipe H.
Lopez, a graduate student in the Ph.D. program in urban planning at UCLA
and a native speaker of San Lucas Quiavin� Zapotec. The Los Angeles Times,
Univision, and the Evening Outlook have all featured Lopez for this work.
The dictionary is the product of a National Science Foundation-funded
project at UCLA, a center for the scholarly study of Zapotec.
The two-volume dictionary contains over 9,000 entries and cross-references.
Zapotec words and expressions are defined in both English and Spanish.
Entries include examples of words used in natural sentences, as well as
grammatical and cultural notes. The introduction includes a survey of the
language's grammar. It uses a new spelling system representing contrasts in
vowel phonation and derived tone. Volume II contains English-Zapotec and
Spanish-Zapotec indices with over 20,000 brief entries.
We will celebrate this unique achievement at a community event at the
Oaxacan restaurant Guelaguetza (11127 Palms Boulevard), which Hispanic
Magazine chose this month as one of the top three Hispanic restaurants in
Los Angeles, on Saturday, October 16, from 3:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon.
One of the first ethnic studies centers, the UCLA Chicano Studies Research
Center was established by visionary scholars in 1969. For thirty years, its
publishing unit has led in the field's dissemination.
